IO2: the RoboFish toolkit

The Intellectual Output 2 (IO2) develops a set of kits useful to teach educational and marine robotics at the primary school following the educational curriculum developed in the Intellectual Output 3 (IO3).  Notably, for the Basic curriculum, a Basic kit adapted from commercial kits is applied; for the Advanced curriculum, a robotic kit resembling a fish (RoboFish) is developed.

The RoboFish toolkit, as a whole, provides teachers and students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of robotics and programming, exploiting its capability to adapt to different skill levels. It is designed to have a modular architecture, which will be compatible with many systems currently used in educational programs to foster the kids’ technological background. Sensors and actuators are added to the robot’s mechatronic architecture to allow the robot to “sense” both the aerial and terrestrial environments and the marine environment.

The RoboFish toolkit is innovative in the context of educational robotics kits for several reasons:

  • it is based on concepts of both marine and educational robotics, so it has a strong potential for teaching environmental education and for attracting students to blue careers;
  • thanks to distributed computing capabilities, it can be used to introduce IoT implementations;
  • some parts of the RoboFish toolkit can be designed by students with CAD software for 3D printing, enhancing the possibility to develop digital and artistic skills in the curriculum
